Cozia Monastery, in the patronage of Saint Trinity, is one of the oldest and well known monuments in the Vallachia region.
|
The monastery can be reached by following the National Road Ramnicu-Valcea - Sibiu, tourning to North, from Calimanesti.
It is located at approximately 22 km from Ramnicu-Valcea.
The monastery is situated on the border of the Olt River in a picturesque zone, between forests and mountains, in a peaceful place.
The monument was build by the order of Mircea cel Batran (Mircea the Elder) in the 18th in 1388 year.

Mircea cel Batran was the prince of Vallachia between 1386 and 1395, and again between 1397 and 1418.
In his time the Ottoman Empire was keept away from principality's borders and from Western Europe.
This time, the prince of Moldavia was Petru I al Moldovei, also known as Musat.
In the charter that attest the apparition of the monasterz, the Prince wrotten: "It was my willing to erect by the ground a monastery,
in the place named Calimanesti on Olt River... ".
Also, this Church is a landmark in Romanian History, meaning one of the best periods of them.
This is the era of millitary glory, economic growth and cultural development, under a prince that signed in this way (as a sign of his power):
"I, in the Christ believer and esteemer and, of Christ lover and the only master, I Mircea great Voievode and Prince,
from the goodwill of the God and from the gift of the God, being the sovereign of the entire Ungrovlachia and of the
territories from over the mountains, also to the tatarians lands and Herteg from Almas and Fagaras and, prince of Banat
of Severin and over the both sides of Danube and, also to the Great Seea..."

In the right side the painture still preserve the portrait of the great prince.
Alse, the monument keeps the impression of other great princes of Vallachia:
the interior painture, innitially made between 1390 and 1391, was repainted after 1512 by the order of Neagoe Basarab that,
also, buit the fountain that borrowed his name.

After 1706, Constantin Brancoveanu has ordered to be buid the church porch in the weel known "Brancovenesc" style.
The other parts of the monastery were buid from the beginning in the Byzantine style.
