|
One of the most beautiful regions in Romania is that zone, of Fagaras Mountains.
It is located in the south of the Medias city, at a distance of aproximately 80 km,
and is visible, in some days, right from Medias.
In Fagaras Mountains are many summits over 2000 m altitude, numerous waterfalls and gacial lakes.
In that zone can be founded Balea and Arpasel natural reservations, both protected by law,
as a consequence of flora diversity and of the existence of rare species that can be seen here.

At an aproximatively 2000 m height, on a distance of 90 km, lays the TRANSFAGARASAN highway, the road from Muntenia to Transilvania.
The TRANSFAGARASAN starts from Arefu village, in Arges County, at the 61 km of national road DN7C and ends in the Cartisoara village,
in Sibiu County, when the road is crossing DN1 national road.
It is 91.5 kilometers long and consists of two lanes, having many
slopes and serpentine windings.
Before reaching Balea Lake, the road traverses the longest tunnel in Romania (887 m), the Balea Tunnel that goes through
the mountain at ovet 2000 m height.
Just one lane of 6 meters width and a sidewalk of 1 meter exist in the tunnel.
The tunnel is not artificialy lighted.
From the end of October to the beginning of June, the road is closed for the traffic because of the snow that covers it.
In the winter, transportation from Balea Cascada to Balea Lac can be made with funicular over a distance of 3800 m.
Even if here we do not have a holiday resort in the true sense of the word, the lovers of mountains are feeling here
as in their most appropriate environment.
Balea Waterfall
Placed in the Fagaras Mountains, between Moldoveanu and Negiu tops, Balea Waterfall is the most famous waterfall in Romania.
It is located at 1,234 meters altitude and it has a fall of water of 60 meters.
Balea Glacial Lake
Balea Glacial Lake is one of the largest lakes from the Fagaras Mountains;
it is 360 m length, width 240 m width and 11 m deep. The surface is about 120 hectares.
The lake is situated at 2034 m altitude and is declared a natural reservation being protected by law.
